Poker and luck.

We all appreciate luck in poker, but in many ways luck is the enemy of a good poker player.

Beginners tend to treat poker much like they would treat craps, roulette, or other pure chance games. They think they will win if they catch good cards and lose if they don't.

Many times when a bad player wins a pot, he will have gotten lucky to do it. The bad player comes from behind, sucks out when not getting pot odds, makes miracle river catches etc. The bad player has a million ways to get lucky.

Bad players also try to get lucky. So, it’s no surprise that bad players are generally luckier than good poker players.

Some poker players also tilt far more than others, if a player truly has been the recipient of bad luck for a while, usually it becomes easier for that player to go on tilt.

Most great poker players have big egos, and that kind of ego does not allow them to view their game as one where luck plays much of a role. Yet these great players do not always win, So either there is luck in poker, even at the highest levels, or the great players don't always play well.

Most advanced poker players are willing to concede the existence of short term luck, but most believe, quite rightly, that in the long term the better players will get the money.

You don’t want to get lucky yourself, you want your opponents to make luck their present to you. Get lucky by having your opponent put in five bets while drawing to a double bellybuster.

The variables in poker explains why you can't simply say something like poker is 70% skill and 30% luck. The amount of luck found in poker is a very complex question.

But remember the luckier you are at poker, the worse you play.

$1,000,000 To Prove That Poker Is A Game Of Skill

On Phil Galfond´s blog you can read about a great challenge. Although Phil thinks it's unlikely they would get taken up on this, he would love to play to prove that poker is a game of skill.

Phil writes: " the fact that we're legitimately offering $1,000,000 to $1 should convince some people that there's more to this game than just luck. "

The challenge:
With Congressman Barney Frank preparing to introduce legislation this month addressing the ambiguities of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), BluefirePoker.com is willing to put its money where it’s mouth is, to prove that Poker is a game of skill, not luck.

They are offering $1,000,000 to President Obama or any member of the U.S. Congress willing to play a Poker game against any of their poker pros, and the winnings can go to the charity of choice.

No one in their right mind would turn down this challenge if Poker were a game based on luck, because the odds are so far in their favor. Putting up $1 for a chance to win $1,000,000.

The specific terms of the game are to be announced but the format will include an equal number of chips at the start of the game. The length of the game must also be long enough to demonstrate the advantage of skill, in the long run the better player wins the game because the player’s skills increase the odds of success.

You can read Phil Galfond´s blog here.

And you can digg the story here.

Pokerstars 25 Billion Hand Ends With A Spilt Pot.

In all the excitement leading up to Pokerstars 25 billionth hand, no one could predict how interesting the big hand would be.

It happened in the early morning hours of Monday February 16th. At the poker table Susilva, a $1/$2 limit Omaha Hi-Lo table.

Player Confedrate had just sat down and was waiting to post his blinds. Not dealt into the hand, he was not eligible for the prize. All he could do was sit there and watch it play out. Pokerstars support wrote in the chat:
"Confedrate, it looks like that's right. You were waiting to post your blind, and didn't get dealt in. I'm very sorry."

Then player NeonFrost got disconnected and he´s hand was folded, but when he came back he said " Why would i ever fold"

Poker stars was quick on the case. The people behind the scenes reviewed the hand and awarded the prizes as if NeonFrost had been dealt into the hand. That was a good thing for him. He had the queen-high flush, good enough for the high pot and half the big prize.

When it was all sorted out, here's what the prizes looked like.

NeonFrost: Won high pot -- $50,000 and tourney package
tupapi777: Won low pot -- $50,000 and tourney package

Fulltilt Poker Getting Ready For The Durrrr Challenge.

The first "durrrr" challenge, which should be Patrik Antonius vs Tom Dwan is supposed to get underway at any moment at Fulltilt Poker.

Fulltilt Poker has accommodated Dwan and Antonius by opening up four "durrrr" Challenge $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha tables. They are all heads-up tables, as this will be a heads-up challenge.

Dwan made headlines in the poker world earlier this year when he issued his challenge. Anyone was welcome to accept, except for Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond.

The challenge:

A heads-up battle that would consist of at least 50,000 hands. Four tables would be played at all times, with minimum stakes of $200/$400. Dwan would allow his opponent to choose the game of choice from Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold'em or a mix of the two.

If Dwan's opponent was ahead (after rake) at the end of the challenge, then Dwan would pay out $1.5 million dollars on top of whatever he lost during the challenge.

If Dwan was ahead after rake, then his opponent would have to cough up an additional $500,000.

At least three players apparently accepted the terms of the challenge, including: Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius and David Benyamine.

Antonius will be getting the first crack at "durrrr", and the challenge should get underway this week.

Watch out for the challenge and play poker with the pros at Fulltilt Poker here.

Pokerstars 25 Billionth Hand With Awarding Cash Prizes.

Online poker players are in for a treat this weekend, Pokerstars has introduced promotions as part of its 25 billionth hand celebration. The festivities will be capped off when the milestone hand is dealt. Its winner will take home $100,000 plus $50,000 in major tournament entries.

Beginning with the 24.85 billionth and continuing until the 25 billionth hand, Pokerstars will be awarding cash prizes to the winners of every millionth hand. When a milestone hand kicks off, a pop-up window will appear and a PokerStars Host will head to the table to explain what’s at stake.

The amount that can be won depends on a table’s stakes. If a millionth hand occurs at a micro-stakes game, its winner will take home $300 and the rest of the players will pocket $125.

Low-stakes millionth hand winners will see their bankrolls boosted by $750 and the rest of the pack takes home $250.

Medium stakes hand winners receive $1,250 and high-stakes champions will take home $2,500. The rest of the table at those stakes receives $500 and $1,000, respectively. A bonus multiplier based on a player’s VIP status ranges from 15% to 200%.

The winner of the 25 billionth hand will receive a colossal $150,000 in cash and prizes. First, the player’s bankroll will be boosted by $100,000. They will also receive four prize packages for some of the largest poker tournaments held: the European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo Grand Final in Monaco, Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure in The Bahamas, World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, and PokerStars’ own World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) Main Event.

Back when the site logged its 10 billionth hand of poker, Justine "justine0003" Hall took home $100,000 while playing on a $0.01/$0.02 micro-stakes table when her 3-8 of clubs turned a flush. Amazingly, the pot size was nearly $13, as four players were all in to try to earn the $100,000 prize.

Daniel Negreanu´s Blog: From $10 To $100.000

Daniel Negreanu has been spotted at the microstakes NL cash tables blinds $0.01-$0.02. at Pokerstars.

Starting from just $10 Negreanu will try to turn it into a whopping $100.000.

As Daniel writes on he´s blog "" This is actually way more fun than I thought it was going to be.""

Daniel Negreanu has set a bunch of rules, one of them is to play poker with a 500 big blind bankroll, and move up a level whenever he has 500 big blinds to the next level.

Here is a list of all the rules:

1. I won't move up in limits unless I have 500 big blinds for that limit. I'm starting at $0.01-$0.02 with a $10 bankroll.

2. When possible, my buy in amount will allow me 5 buy ins at that limit. For example, if I have $5 left, my buy in for the game will be $1. I'll continue to do that until I dip below the min buy in.

3. I will play only NL cash games. I'll try to play full ring games as much as possible.

4. If I double my bankroll in a session I'll quit on my blind to help avoid risking too high a percentage of my bankroll in any one hand.

5. At about the $5-$10 limit I may decide to increase the number of big blinds required to move up in limits. 500 BB's is plenty for the micro games, but could be rather short for the higher limit games with better opponents. I'll base my decision on when to do that at my discretion.

6. I may also lower the buy in amount for the higher limit games from 1/5th of my bankroll per session to 1/10th of my bankroll per session. Again, I'll make that decision when the time comes.

7. When the amount needed to reach the goal is less than the 1/5th of the bankroll buy in, the buy in will be equal to the amount needed to reach the goal. Example: If 1/5th of the bankroll is $4.50 but you only need $2.50 to reach the goal, the buy in for the next session will be $2.50.

If you go to Daniel negreanu´s blog you can read what he thinks about playing microstakes on Pokerstars.

Pennsylvania Judge Rules Poker is a Game of Skill.

In a ruling handed down by Pennsylvania Judge Thomas A. James Jr. in Columbia County on Friday, it was ruled that Texas Hold’em is a game of skill and therefore not gambling under state law.

The ruling sets an “excellent bar” for future poker litigation, according to Poker Players Alliance (PPA) Executive Director John Pappas.

The basic question, according to Judge James’ ruling, is whether poker is dominated by chance or skill. He commented “Simply, if chance predominates, Texas Hold’em is gambling. If skill predominates, it is not gambling.”

In the case of Texas Hold’em, Judge James explained that extensive literature exists that describes winning strategies to play the game. He even cited Mike Caro’s “Secrets of Winning Poker” by saying, “the money flows from the bad players to the strong players.”

In his ruling, Judge James explains that the “dominant factor test” has traditionally applied to games of skill and cites multiple mathematical studies that prove it, including one linking “poker and economics.”

An included study even explained that players receive equal amounts of premier and lackluster starting hands. However, “Beginning poker players rely on big hands and lucky draws. Expert poker players use their skills to minimize their losses on their bad hands and maximize their profits on their big hands.”

The defendant in the case, Walter Watkins, ran a $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em game out of his garage. No rake was taken, according to the PPA. Instead, players were encouraged to tip the dealer at the end of every hand based on the pot’s size, just as they would in conventional casinos. Only Texas Hold’em was played.

Clearly, the judge had an understanding of how poker is played. Coming to this decision, to him, was not a far leap. The decision sets an excellent bar for us in the future.

The UIGEA, which was passed in 2006, defers to existing state and federal laws when defining what is “unlawful internet gambling.

This is excellent news for online poker. If this can set a precedent for other cases we are all a step closer to the goal to regulate online poker in the US.
